I met this wonderful family through one of my wedding couples this year. Matt and Amber were amazing to work with and Matt's family was no different. What a fun, joyful family this is. There is nothing more wonderful than capturing memories for a family where the love shows, from the oldest to the youngest.

Love is Kind ~ Louisiana Family Photography

One of my sweet families based their session this year off of the following Scripture text. It was a joy to work with them to capture the meaning of it to their family. The one thing we sometimes all need to be reminded of, love {charity} is always kind.

1 Corinthians 13

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal.

²And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains, but have not charity, I am nothing.
³And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
⁴Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up;

There I was, 25 years old, a mom with a dream, a passion and a 35mm Minolta camera with 3 lenses. I had no idea what true photography was or even where to begin. Google became my best friend, I gave every extra hour I could in my pursuit of knowledge. There were detours, dead ends, cliffs and deep ravines, the road was never easy, it didn't happen over night. To be truthful, I am still learning, still in pursuit of my ever changing idea of excellence.

Passion will do that to you, it will make you push, struggle, work, and climb with all your might. When you get to a place where you feel like you can see the end in sight, you realize the struggle has made you different, made you stronger, better, a more whole person as well.

The thing about journeys, you never go through them alone. There are always those who are helping to hold you up as you follow your dream. To my never wavering, never changing support, I say Thank You. You let me dream, let me go on this journey of discovery and you cheered me on.

To my husband who has been there through meltdowns and victories, through "I love my camera, I hate my camera" "I think I am getting better, oh never mind I stink", it has been one roller coaster ride, yet you threw your hands up in the air and found the joy in the journey,

To my sister in heart, Amanda, for listening to me talk about photography and cameras to the point where you knew more than you ever wanted to know about both, for never once questioning if I could be the person I wanted to become and do this job. You never ask how, only when and told me to kick it into gear already because what was I waiting on?

To my memaw for always believing I could, for being that support and strength when I was younger, for helping me to love people through the worst and pray even in the best of times,

To my parents for letting me be my quirky self and loving me anyway, for saying they are proud of me every time they get a chance,

To my boys for the hours you have spent on shoots with me and never complained, for ever hug, kiss, and "you rock mom" you make me a better person, sometimes I wonder how I got so blessed to be your mom,

To my wonderful beautiful clients who took a chance on me and let me capture your tomorrows, even when, lets face it, I wasn't that good, but you stuck by me and helped me get better every year,

Above all thank you God for giving me the courage when I had lost myself, to follow a dream planted somewhere in my heart, to overcome myself to be able to do this job that allows me to effect a change in the world around me. Each day I get to take a little of the horrible in the world and replace it with beautiful images of wonderful people, and for that moment, the world is right again. That is an amazing thing.

Today I am simple overcome. I am simple Thankful.

May your each have a blessed Thanksgiving, remembering what truly is important and cherishing that which we sometimes over look for far to long. Family and friends.

Walmart Vs. Target ..............But Why?

If you live in a town like mine, there are lots of choices on places that sell everyday items. Places like Walmart, Target, K-Mart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Fred's. I am talking about things like washing powder, soap, shampoo, and even toilet paper. We all go to these different stores or choose to shop at them for different reasons.

When I am on the side of town where Target is, I shop there, when I am closer to Walmart, I shop there, when I don't feel like driving, I go to the dollar store or grocery store that is 2 minutes away. We all make buying choices based on several different reasons, including, sales, coupons, location, and price. Sometimes, woman, have even been known to make a buying choice based on nothing more than their mood.

We, as consumers, know this is how the world works. Those stores we shop at, know this is how it works. That's why they bring in new products, revamp their layouts, improve customer service, work on pricing, and find ways to pull away from the other stores that sell the exact same thing.

One thing you never see when you open your email as a consumer is an email or message from say, Walmart running you down and being ugly because you went to Target for toilet paper this week. It doesn't happen, it never will. It is not good customer service, it would make them look desperate, and why would they waste energy being negative towards one customer when there are more who need their bright yellow smiley face.

So why do photographers feel it is ok to practice this ugly brand of customer service, customer harassment, and lash out at one time customers? I wish I had that answer, I wish it didn't happen, but it does. I have been hearing about it recently more and more. It saddens me in my heart.

Before you get offended that some one went to a different photographer, start with yourself, make sure you didn't push them away. Take it as a challenge to win them back and step up your game. Lashing out at the client or other photographer is not the way to handle a situation such as this. It makes you look small, it makes me sad. I want to encourage, uplift, and enjoy photography and the world of wonderful photographers I meet along the way, I hope you all find it in your hearts to do the same.

Walmart and Target are worth millions, you don't see them being petty and unprincipled...............Now do you?

Holiday Spirit, Holiday Love

I pray as we head into the holiday season, instead of getting down and upset, we all remember this time is for family, for friends, for sharing the warmth we should all feel in our hearts, for snuggling together against the cold, for wearing sweaters with flip flops because that's how Louisianians roll. For peace, hope, joy, for love we should show year round. For more memories and less buying, for more smiles and less crying, for thankfulness, for twinkling lights, for Christmas trees in November, for turkeys, for ham, even for spam. For pumpkin spice lattes, for big pots of chili, soup, and the stews too, for every tear jerker they show on Hallmark channel from here until next year. Let every day come with thanks and may giving keep our hearts light with joy.

May we remember those less fortunate than us and let our hands work to do something wonderful for some one else. Give back, give away, just give. Take less, ask for less, expect less and this year be joyful about it. It is truly the way we should be. To finish off from a photographers heart, a little thanks for the bokeh we all love so much.

So to the simple things in life that make our hearts sing, memories that make us smile, and bells that ring, here is hoping you make this holiday season the best you have ever had.

In Front Of The Lens............

Have I mentioned how very very much I dislike pink, have I mentioned it actually looks good on me, no matter my loathing of it. If it cared, it would look bad, but Pink has it's own rules, it's own opinion, and so me and pink had a little fun this weekend, well us and another invited guest.
Saturday I sheepishly gave the camera over to my reluctant hubby. "It's been a year already" he ask, "You know I can't see it the way you can, I just not like that." But he loves me, so once a year, ever year, he shoots my head shots. It's one of the many reasons I love him.
It's hard to give over the camera and stand in front of it, but as a photographer, it reminds me how my clients feel, nervous, unsure, a little scared, wondering "which side is my good side", and then the elation of finding that really great image, and remembering once again why your willing to step in front of the camera to be recorded for those you love.
So to my friends who make me buy pink, I thank you. For my hubby Joe who is patient and loving while he plays photographer once a year, I thank you. To all my clients, followers, and supporters who keep me doing what I do, I thank you.

Here I am this year, shining in PINK and pretending I have learned to love it. I challenge you all to take a photo today. I think of 9/11, of the tenth anniversary yesterday, and I want to shout it from the roof top, you never promised tomorrow, so don't wait till it's to late.

The last one is blurry, but I love it still. He's not a photographer, but sometimes I think when your taking images of some one you love, your heart takes over.

This year, armed with a full frame sensor, I just can't wait for all the creamy beautiful goodness this fall's sessions are going to bring.

Bookworm, Nerdy Glasses & All The Jazz

I can remember being so little I couldn't see over the library counter, I remember the smell of the pages, the crispness of the cover, the love of the story inside those pages that could take me any where. I guess in so many ways I am still like that. These days the book maybe a kindle as often as a true book and reading glasses adorn my face as I soak up the story. I have a love for mysteries and moving soulful stories.
I must read the book before watching a movie based on it, that's just one of my rules. So that rule is actually what lead me to today's post. I picked up the book expecting loads of laughter because of the movie previews, little did I know that this book would be so powerful, so gut wrenching.
I don't know if it hit home because I am a southern girl, born and raised in a state where things are not so in the past or if my heart was just pricked at humanities ability to truly believe one person is better than the next. What ever it was, this amazingly written book shook me, made me laugh, made me cry, made me feel, and for that I thank the author. If you have not picked it up and read it, then do so, it is a read you will not soon forget and one that may touch your life and change you heart for the better.

Baby Luke ~ Louisiana Newborn Photography

This little guy was an angel to work with. Newborn sessions are usually time consuming and hard but little Mister Luke was so sweet the whole time. No fussing and didn't pee on the photog once......which made me super happy. Since he was such a sweet baby, we got some amazing images of him.

Remember when scheduling for newborn sessions to book before the baby is due and have the session when they are 7 to 10 days old. The chance of having wonderful images is much greater the younger they baby is when the session is done. If the concern is skin imperfections, most newborn photographers do fix newborn skin flaws automatically. So don't wait to late to schedule.

School Days ~ Here Again

Off they go to school. My mothers heart breaks because I miss their voices, their laughter, their presence through out my day. We are close family, never very far from one another, like the solar system in so many ways, we revolve around each other, share hopes and dreams. It's just the way we are, it's a blessing, I have come to realize not every one has that. For those that do, never take it for granted.

This morning as we got lunches fixed and combed hair, my oldest ask if I was still tired, maybe I looked it, maybe I yawned, maybe he just reads me and knows, but I was. He sweetly said to me "hang in there till I get home and then we can curl up and take a nap." Then with a sweet kiss on my cheek he was gone out the door and we were off to the bus stop. So I decided in that moment, to cherish more than ever the time we get together, even at 6AM.

The Time, It Flies

There was once a little boy who ran around in his diaper with the chunkiest legs I had ever seen. We called him pork chop and bubba, but his name was Joel. He was little, so in need of help and protection in those days. This Joel, I remember from 5 years ago, is not the same one who walked in my office the other day to proudly proclaim he had his first loose tooth.
I wanted to cry, to sob, to pout like a two year old, but instead, I had to put on some courage and be happy for him. My baby boy is growing up. The only conciliation I have, is knowing that they both, so far, no matter the age, still give me sweet hugs. If this part never changes, I think one day when they are way taller than me, I may still see my boys as just little tots.
The hardest part about letting them grow, is accepting that they will get hurt. That you can no longer completely protect them from the pain that life brings. As the years pass like a quick breath, I pray that no matter what life brings, they allow it to make them stronger and that they never forget, time does indeed fly.

DIY~ Frame Free Wall Hanging For Prints

If your like me....a mom, then at some point you most likely have experienced the loss of some nice collectible glass item. Either from an accident that occurred involving a child or even a husband, I have lost almost every collectible glass item in our home. My family is truly a rough and tumble bunch. Unfortunately, this breaking has included many a photo frame.

Being a mom running a home and business, I couldn't see putting the money into buying canvas prints for my home. I honestly thought, they would end up with large holes in them and I wasn't sure my fragile sanity could handle that. So I went back to my scrapbooking roots and came up with a much cheaper way to display my images in all sizes, and not feel completely devastated if they get destroyed by my wild crew.

Here are the steps to Do It Yourself. Let me know if it is something you try.

List of supplies {most can be purchased at your local art and craft store}:
1} Photo print in the size of your choice.
2} Wood frame wrapped blank canvas the same size as your print.
3} Acrylic Paint in the color of your choice, to paint the edge of your canvas backing.
4} Mod Podge to adhere and then protect your print.
5} A set of artist paint brushes. Make sure there is a t least one very wide brush. {say 3 to 4 inches}
6} Small plastic containers or bowls for paint and mod podge.

Here are the two colors I purchased. Black for my living room and the deep red for my office. I found a large assorted pack of artist brushes for around 5.00. The paints where each less than 2.00.

I love this stuff. It is basically liquid glue that dries clear. I heart Mod Podge, lol. This large container was 6.99. It has lasted me for 26 canvases.

It is still over half full.

An 8x10 wood framed wrapped canvas. I painted it before taking a photo. Sorry about that.

Be sure and paint the whole side of the canvas that is wrapped around the frame. Most prints do not overlap the side of the canvas so paint the top edge of the canvas a couple of inches toward the middle. I probably needed to do a double coat of paint but for the sake of today's post, I will move forward.

An example of what I mean by wrapped on a wooden frame. The frame doesn't have to be wood, but the frame is important for hanging purposes. I purchased a set of 2 8x10 canvases from our local super center for 5.99. The canvases from our super center have staples in the sides to hold the wrap. The ones from our local large arts and crafts store do not. I prefer no staples for any large prints.

To adhere the print to the canvas, using a wider brush, paint the mod podge onto the canvas. **Important, make sure to let the paint dry completely first.**

Line up your print and place onto coated canvas. You will have just a few moments to move and adjust the print before it is no longer movable. Using a rag, press down lightly across image to make sure it adheres well even in the center.

Since most of the prints are the same size as the canvas and go all the way to the edge, we need to make sure we fill any gaping with the mod podge. Using the brush and holding the canvas, fill the gap with the mod podge by stroking up to ward the print along each side of the canvas.

Once the sides are finished, start coating the print with the mod podge. Use even strokes to go from one side of the image to the other. Don't be worried if you need to go back over a section to even the stroke out. When beginning a new stroke make sure you have a well coated brush, half way across, turn the brush over to finish coating the print. Once you have the glue down on that strip, simple go back over it quickly with your brush to make it an even clean stroke.

Here is what it looks like when it has been completely coated. This is where you get worried the first time you do this...you think, no way is that going to dry clear. It does, trust me, but I still get nervous.

Here is one I finished for my office earlier. If the light hits the print just right, you can see the brush strokes....it took me 23 tries to get that photo with the brush strokes showing. So it's the only down side, but not a huge one.

The great thing about it, you can hang them right on the wall once they are all dry. The mod podge protects the prints from dust and moisture. I think the large one in the photo above is around a 24 x 30. The huge upside to this project.......you can create beautiful photo walls in your home for cheap and there is no glass to be broken. Both of these points make this mom super happy.

The Heart Of The Matter.......

It's been in the frame for over 7 years. I am scared to remove it since it is the only copy I have, but there it is, in the middle of what some days is the whole of my existence, my office. Burnt orange walls and red shag carpeting house the room I use as my home office. It is there I find myself for hours. Working away as life continues on beyond my door.
Stacks of wedding magazines, books, a collection of pens anyone would be jealous of, shipping tape, my beta desktop fish tank containing "George The Fish", more paperclips than I could ever use, the hard drives, the enormous amount of scrap paper with list and reminders, the little pretty glass box my daddy bought me holding my business cards, 3 pairs of glasses, germx, a stack of mail, and in the center of it all there sits a photo of the biggest inspiration in my life beyond God. My memaw.
In her lap, held by her sweet aging hands, is my oldest son, Quinton. He has always called her "old grandmaw", and I cherish this photo beyond words. It pushes me. She was the kind who would always send you money when you needed it but hadn't told her. She worried about us more than herself and all she ever wanted was for us to be ok.
There was this connection I had with her I have never had with another, at least not as strongly. From 3 hours away, the day she fell, I knew something was wrong. I called her house time and time again, in my heart silently pleading for her to answer. I called my dad and mom so worried, but we all lived so far away. I knew the next day when the phone rang that I wouldn't like the news.
I dropped everything and went to stay with her in the hospital. She had started having strokes and at times she didn't know me, she thought I was my mom. I was there, holding her hand, and she would ask where I was. She is my heart, there is no explanation for it. Even now when she has faded so far she knows no one, I still can feel her love.
It has been 3 very long years of not hearing her voice, I am lost most days in understanding it, but my heart feels grief for her. She pushes me still, with no audible voice, to succeed, to always be more. I push for the day when I can sit by her bed and say with more honesty than ever, "We made it, memaw, we are doing just fine."
For now I will strive harder than ever to become better, to be more tomorrow, than I am today. I will accept the silence and the unspoken love of a woman strong in faith beyond her years, I will accept the promises she received for me and I will let myself push one more day, one more hour to be the person, she believed I could become. Happy, successful, and brave.

Here is to Ninja Trash Men

Most people hate Monday's, I kind of like them, for many reasons. My weekends are always crazy, my work usually means when others are relaxing, I am busy, so my rest days are Monday and Wednesday. I like Monday better for one reason, the ninja trash truck and the men who ride it. We have 2 trash services on our road, Monday JimBill Disposal comes to collect my trash, and at 5AM they are in stealth mode. You have to be awake to even know they are there. It is awesome, amazing, wonderful. Why, you ask, why would I care, because on Wednesday the other company comes, also at 5AM to collect the trash from my neighbors, and everyone on our rd gets woken up by what sounds like a herd of cattle running down the street. So of my 2 days to rest, I only sleep in on Monday and for that one glorious morning, I am happy, super happy. So happy I am considering cooking brownies and waking up early next week just to surprise my ninja trash guys with a treat.

Sometimes, even the very small things, really do matter. Oh yes they do.

& Here Is To The 4th

I have always loved the 4th of July, there seemed to be a sparkle in the air. An electric happiness that could not be swayed. The get togethers, the grill smoking, the fireworks popping, and the all together fun of it all. It was very exciting to a small child.

As life went on not much has changed, I still love this day, but now I view it differently. I have uncles, great uncles, a grandfather, friends, and church family who have served in the military. Now this day, much like memorial day becomes a day about respect, appreciation, and honor. It is a day also of remembrance for those who gave so much, to not only us in America but to others across the ocean and on the other side of the world.

So on this day, I say thank you, to those who have served to make our country come to be in the past, to keep it safe today, and who will strive to protect our tomorrows. God bless their families and their hearts.

Post 100, TAWANDA, & Winners

My 100th post, how exciting to look back and see how far I have come in these last few years. Can't wait to see what the next few years hold. A BIG Thank You to all who have been a part of it. The wonderful clients, the followers of the blog, and of course the facebook stalkers {you hold a special place in my heart, hee hee} but no seriously, with out the support, this journey would not have been as wonderful.

Now for the unveiling of THE NAME....
I thought long and hard before I picked a name for the new camera body I purchased. I shot with her for 4 months, and I just kept coming back to one of my favorite movies of all time "Fried Green tomatoes" and one of my sweet facebook fans mention the name Tallulah, which lead to Tawanda.

Unlike the movie, she isn't an avenger but she sure rocks, which makes me super happy. Let's face it, my other favorite movie is "Pride & Prejudice".....and to be honest "Mrs. Darcy" just didn't sound quit right.

So a huge congrats to LISA FONTENOT for helping me arrive at the new name for my new camera. Your the winner of a $50.00 B&H Photo gift card.

A Little Trip To Kansas. What An Adventure!!

So there is was, March 31st. I was getting ready to board a plane for the first time ever. I had on a happy face, that I am good at, hiding any fear or uncertainty so no one around me thinks I am not ok, and since my 2 sweet boys where at the airport to wish me bye, I was holding together like a champ. I am still waiting on my trophy, I am sure it will arrive any day and I will pat myself on the back with pride.

My mom came down to keep my sweet boys while I was gone, I was off to shoot a wedding for one of the sweetest couples ever. As the time neared for my departure, and the boys had to leave, I pulled out the camera for a few quick shots and it happened they took over the camera and as my mom watched in disbelief they began to pose and shoot. Yeap thats my boys, I am gonna have free second shooters soon. Ha ha ha.

and yes, they are always like this. Always together, never very far apart. Their fights are hilariuos and often consist of one calling the other "tarter sauce" while the other responds with a resonding "fish stick". Don't worry, I absolutely know how blessed I am to have such wonderful boys. Absolutely. This was their sad face because I was leaving. They weren't so thrilled about 3 days with out mom. I was so jumping up and down with joy because they missed me so. I was, I will admit it.

2nd Plane window. Dark had fallen, but the lights were amazing as we passed over from large cities to rural areas.

and as I got off the plane in Kansas, the only one not wearing a jacket, probably the only one who laughed at the 32 degrees they called cold, it felt great to me, these 2 beautiful faces where waiting on me. My bride and her soon to be mother-in-law. It made my night, made the trip, made Kansas a great place to be......well the barbeque wasn't so bad either.

Sweet Little Miracle, Miss Laura Turns 1 ~Lake Charles Family Photography

What can I say about little Miss Laura. She is adorable, beautiful, sweet, and a complete miracle. Her parents had tried for years to have a child. Heartbroken to discover they could not have a child of their own, they turned to adoption. They put out the time and money to get ready to bring a child into their lives and call them their own. They waited with empty arms, hurting, and aching for a child to complete their sweet little family. They smiled through it all. Her dad, a military man, stayed strong. Her mom, so blessed with a wonderful personality, waited with tried but trusting patience. Then it happened, mom discovered she was pregnant, a blessing had come their way and instead of being blessed with a child to call their own, they were going to be blessed to carry and birth their own unexpected miracle. Rejoice they did, never had I seen her dad's smile that big, his whole face smiled. 9 months later here came beautiful Miss Laura. I was blessed to document the grandparents seeing her for the first time at the hospital, dad holding his sweet baby girl, and those so cherished newborn baby photographs. Then it happened, faith was put to the test. Laura had a problem with her heart, she was sent to New Orleans to have heart surgery. They sweet little bundle of joy was facing a life threatening situation, and with everyone else who had watched their struggle, I cried and prayed. If ever there was a world I understand, it would be the world of boys. Raising sons gives you a leg up on understanding them. So when clients come with boys at the curious stage, the session takes a different turn. A slower but faster pace, one where your faster to snap a photograph but slower to pose, because posing might make you miss that moment. The moment when the sun glints off their hair and wonder, amazement, feels their eyes as, one rock, limb, ball of dirt, or in this case, a chicken, captures their undivided attention. What is success when shooting boys, well when they are babies and refuse to smile, it is getting them to look at the camera, when they are toddlers and young children, it is getting them to slow down and look at the camera, and when they are 11 and smiling is so not cool any more, it is capturing that smile, just once, and saying, it's ok, that was just for mom. Oh yes the world of boys is different, it is a different pace than the rest of the world around them, with different rules, and different understanding, but for a photographer, it is still every bit as fun.

So how did you meet? I ask this question to each of my couples and I love to hear the guys point of view.

Nichole was two hours late the day they met. She was supposed to be going to a birthday party with a mutual friend and when the time went by he called Justin to go instead. It turned out the three of them went together and in his words "sparks, they flew."

He is a military man, their love has last through deployment, sleepless worried nights, the stress of planning a wedding with him on the other side of the world in danger, and of course her habit of being late for everything, as she says. So in the course of their love, things have changed, been beyond their control, out of their hands, and yet they still stood there on that beautiful Saturday, hand in hand with laughter singing in the air around them, totally and completely, simply, in LOVE.

In April I will have the honor of capturing this love as it is joined together, as two become one, husband and wife. I have a feeling the laughter and tears will flow freely on that day. That love will not only be singing in the air, but jumping for joy. So until that day I hope they laugh until it hurts, smile with wild abandon, and spend time every day wrapped in each others arms, so in a small way the time apart seems just a distant memory.

Happy Valentines Day. Everyone, whether in a relationship or not, can always find those important people in their lives to share a little extra love with on this day. My husband did this morning, after working a 12 hour night shift, he brought me breakfast to my office. LoVe It.

Yummmmmmmmm, because usually we only let the kids have the toaster strudels, lol.

So since it is this special day of love, here is a little about my sweet hubs and the reason I still love him after all these years.

To My SwEeT HuSbAnD

I always knew beyond a shadow of a doubt I wouldn't be the easiest person to love. My flaws are many. I am beyond stubborn, hard headed, always to busy, never laugh enough, and don't even get your jokes. I wasn't a perfect woman when you loved me the first time. My body doesn't fit the worlds mold, my ideas of how the world should be, the way people should be, are old fashioned in so many ways, even then so many years ago, I was a little different and walked my own little way. For some that would have been a scary thing. To be honest, with me, you just never know what you might get. My anger can run deep, but my love always runs deeper. The one thing you have always said that made you love me more was that I don't ever give up on people, to you it seemed amazing that there where people who just kept loving no matter what. Who didn't turn their back when those they loved went down a road they didn't approve of.

I can't say in all these years there have not been deep disappointments, hard times, hurts, but those times just made us better, stronger, and more in love because we are crazy like that. Sometimes I wish you would quit making me mad on purpose just because you think I look cute when I am mad, I am worried about my blood pressure here, it is a valid concern. I know sometimes you wish I wouldn't push as hard as I do. It's one of my flaws, I just want those I love to live the best life they can, I feel they deserve it, so I try to make it so. On days like today when every one is so focused on Love and relationships, I feel the same as I did over a decade and 2 kids ago.......I would rather fight, throw down, get boiling mad, with you than any one else in the whole world
So the times in marriage when the butterflies disappear, when diapers take over, when bills and worries get in between, until the moments when those butterflies return and everything is some what calm, as long as I can always feel this way then I know its real. Love is butterflies and roses, marriage is tears, work, and a depth of love you have never know, and never felt until one day after years together you stop and look at the one who is sharing all those precious moments in your life and you realize, with out this other person, life on this earth would just not be worth it, trying wouldn't matter, but with them you find the strength to fight each day as it comes.
With you love is a thousand sweet text every week, for no reason, it's calling me sexy when my hair is so wild it would scary most people out of 10 yrs of life, it's you doing the dishes, woo hoo, that right there is enough to make any woman happy. Love is you snoring in my office chair because you refuse to go to bed and leave me to work by myself, love is finding bob pins when I can't...because you always know where I put them...yet I never do. In so many ways you are just you and to me that's perfect.
So Happy Valentines Joseph Irvin Garland, you drive me insane, and I love you for that and so many other reasons........and in case I for get...Thank You for being you. :)

My hope for every one is that instead of money, they find away to show their love through the simplest of loving actions. That is the true challenge on this sweet day where love is all around.

Soft Whispers Of Life's Happiness All Around

Many nights once my sweet boys have fallen asleep dreaming of dinosaurs and bugs, I head back to work. Life sometimes is funny, to be such a social person, so much of the year, this job I love so keeps me too busy for girls lunches and nights out with friends. In the midst of it all, I have my two faithful supporters always at my side. Whether I am in the living room piled up with the laptop or in my office looking "all official" as the family says, my companions are there. One piled up along side of me or in the chair in front of the desk, and the other, much shorter, slightly chunky, floppy eared one, curled at his feet. They support me with their snores. Over the last 3 years they have come to match them to the perfect pattern. It makes me happy. Happy to know that even though they honestly are no help unless my feet get cold and Mags comes to lay on them, they are there, as close as can be, just quietly making sure, I know I am not alone. Who knew a man and his dog could make a person feel so at peace. Snore on my sweet loves, mom's got another long night ahead.

On another note I love looking at this shot late at night. It reminds me I am loved.

There were tears that bright sunny cold day in January when they wed, but more than the stories, the tears, or the words spoken, I was captured by their smiles when finally after a morning apart, there they were looking into each others eyes as she moved alongside her loving father down the aisle to meet her love.

Two Become One On The Eve Of A Beautiful New Year ~Louisiana Wedding Photography

I met Austin and Jennafer when I did their Engagement session. What caught my eye immediately was their fun. Together they are just fun, loving, and of course they are an amazingly beautiful couple. I have to say I was super excited to spend my New Year's Eve shooting their Wedding Day. It was one of the most beautiful moving ceremonies I have had the joy to capture. Enjoy.

Special Occasions By Francis did the decor and food. It was amazing and for the guest who stayed longer for dancing and fireworks, Francis and her crew kept renewing the food and drink. I thought that was a special touch for sure.

I loved that each bridesmaid had a different color and style of dress, as well as, their own style of shoe. Those girls had good taste.

The ceremony was held in Sulphur Louisiana at the Beautiful Our Lady of LaSalette Church.

These guys were hams for sure. I think they may have enjoyed all the photos that were being taken of them. They may have tried to give me a little goofiness, but when 10 minutes before the wedding Austin was pacing behind the church...feeling overwhelmed with excitement and nerves, they were all there by his side to get him calmed down and to his beautiful bride.

What a gorgeous group of ladies. All smiles. It was a joy to see them all helping one another and enjoying the morning as they all prepared to support their friend and new sister in law.

Their bouquets smelled as beautiful as they looked. The delicate paper whites that were sprinkled through out helped tie the theme of "Spring in Winter" together. Paper Whites look like a beautiful spring time flower but actually only bloom in the snow, super cool.

The ceremony was simple amazing. The whole church radiated with love and the glow that surrounded Jennafer and Austin was breathtaking.

1 1/2 year old super cute ball of energy. Love it.

How absolutely adorable are these sweet girls.

Pretty sure this expression says it all......I am thinking there are no nerves now as she stepped out and headed down the aisle. This makes me smile.

What a beautiful mother of the bride. It is easy to see why Jennafer and Her sister are so gorgeous.

Father Jerry had us all in tears and laughing. He has known Austin for many years and you could see how much he cared for them both through out his words and stories. You could feel the love and hope that surrounded this whole event.

This was the bridesmaids idea. Super cute and the groomsmen where super good sports. I think a few actually did do a little massaging, lol.

The reception was amazing. What a wonderful way to ring in the new year.

FAQ- Tips For The Average Consumer When Choosing A Photographer

So I get ask the question all the time, "How can the average person know if the photos they are getting are good and good quality?"
The truth is, in this digital age, if your not a photographer or a lover of photography, it is hard to know what to look for in judging whether the money you are about to spend isn't going to be a waste.
Cameras are so cheap now days that there is literally a photographer on ever corner, but who is learning their craft and giving their best, and who is there to make some "quick money"? That is the real question. Like any other purchase a consumer makes they want to go for the best deal....but unfortunately with photography, that could spell disaster for the pocket book and your family photos. In the field of photography, the saying "you get what you pay for" is a 110% true.
To break it down, I will go over an average family session with me.
Fee-$250.00. Includes 2 hours shoot time, clothing changes, and CD with print release.
So what are you paying for? The photographers time, style, knowledge, and creativity. I usually spend up to 2 hours before finalizing a session, planning a session out. Basing location and style on the families personality. Helping with clothing colors and styles if needed. Then the session is another 2 hours. I shoot in RAW which is digital negative, which must be first processed into JPEG and then edited. So how many hours does that take? To process and sort is 3 hours, to edit another 6, to resize and mark for web and post online so you can share with friends, another 2. Grand total 15 hours. Not every photographer is going to commit that much time and energy to making sure your session is perfect. If you spend 50.00 on your photographer and that included the CD, then expect to get 50.00 quality photos. It just makes sense and it is pretty much the same with everything else in the world.

So here are a few examples to help you be able to spot good quality and "The Bad"when it comes to digital photographs. I will be the first to admit I am a technical snob when it comes to digital photography. I do have the opinion that a photographer should be knowledgeable enough, and have good enough equipment that the photographs they take are technically correct and sound in every way. So the following examples are just that, examples of not technically sound and then some that are. It was so hard to shoot these because I had to force myself to do the wrong settings to get them.

To be technically sound, a photograph should have, correct skin tones, correct focus, correct exposure, and correct color. The pose is absolutely important also, but a wonderfully posed photograph that is not technically sound is still a bad photograph.

Skin tones are so important to the look and quality of a good photo. This is an example of horrible skin tones. People are not usually orange, extremely red, blue, or yellow in real life, so it is never ok for them to be so in a photograph either.

A lot of times, to compound the problem, photographers then over sharpen a bad photograph, making things, even worse.

It is so sharp it almost hurt your eyes. Good photography should never hurt to look at, lol.

Next let's look at focus. Focus can make or break a photograph. This shot is completely out of focus, also called soft focus.

A lot of times I see these shots try to be salvaged by sharpening but a blurred shot, is a blurred shot and can't be saved.

This is a correctly focused shot of the same scene.

Here is another common mistake, one person in focus and one not. Now a lot of photographers, including me, will do a collage of 2 photos with one person looking at us in focus and the other looking away out of focus, and then we will switch the clients and do the same shot again. It makes for a neat collage. The shot below is not an example of that but an example of uncontrolled focus. If both subjects are looking at the camera, then both should be in focus.

Here is another example of uncontrolled focus, and a focused good quality image.

This example is of an incorrectly exposed image, that was then fixed. The danger of trying to fix an overly dark image is Noise. Noise is that static look that covers a photograph. usually this happens in low light conditions like Weddings.

A true wedding photographer should be able to shoot a wedding with out a flash and not have this static noisy look on their photographs. Unfortunately all to often, people say they can shoot weddings but do not have the right equipment or knowledge. So while they will shoot a wedding for less than $1,000.00, the quality will be the same you get at a 50.00 family session....simple bad. The average going rate for a wedding is close to 3,200.00. As with everything else, you get what you pay for. Bad quality wedding photos, 10 years down the road, will make your regret that you chose to spend more money of the food than on the photographer. The thing is, when the food has been eaten and the dress no longer fits correctly, all you have left of that day are those photographs. Make sure, they are shots you can be happy showing your grand kids.

Another thing to watch for is an over use of actions or over styled editing in photographs. While there is always the newest cool edit or action to hit the block, the thing to remember is that in 5, 10, or 20 years these style edited photographs will be out of style. So while the 1st photograph below is cool today, the 2nd clean edited photograph will still be cool in 20 years.

I hope this post helps answer so many of those questions people have about photography. I also hope that after reading this, the average consumer can make better, more informed decision when it comes to capturing the memories that should last for generations to come.

Oh I was ready, after shooting sweet Mr. Cade, the mommy in me wanted another. How sweet and cute he was. Of course, I went home and sanity came rushing back in. It was one of those days were even poor Mags{our basset hound} was hiding. There was roaring dinosaurs and army men all over that house.
Inside voices.......my boys have no idea what that is...............so even though I love them dearly and think they are the cutest boys in the world {my mommy gooogles are huge, lol} I made a decision......Mr. Waiter...I've changed my mind, lol.

Tears and Prayers

I am a crier. I cry.....I really do....I pray as I cry....."please be in focus, please be in focus."

If your not a crier or an emotional person, you may not understand it, but when I am shooting a Wedding or a Labor-Delivery, there is always this moment, when I see the family, the love, the joy, and I cry. I hold the camera really close to my face and hope no one notices, lol.

I haven't decided if it is a good thing to love your clients so and to get to know them so well, that there are moments that move you. I know if it was me, I would love the idea of it all, but lets all remember....I am little different. :)

So on that note, I teared up while doing a sneak peek edit for one of my Brides, who is now a beautiful mom-to-be.

She is an absolutely beautiful mommy and I was moved to yet again capture an important time in her life. That's the blessing about this job, I get to be this invisible force that captures memories that generations later will still be cherished by so many. I am not sure that I can even yet truly appreciate the fullness of that, but I try with each snap of the lens.

She is a wife & mother....He is wired up all day being an electrician

She has 2 daughters....He has a son

Together these 2 families have become 1.

This couple are two of the most fun and joyful people I have ever been blessed to meet. I think I enjoyed their beautiful day as much as they did and am blessed to now call them dear friends. I pray they have many blessed years and that love, laughter, and peace always abide in their home.

I am, it is true. Everytime I think about blogging, I cring. I always pick way to many photos, so it takes forever. It is one of the last things I think about doing. Here is my attempt to be better. What a beautiful set of twin boys. They were born weighing 5.2 & 5.8. I had a blast holding and cuddling them, but it was a lot of work to get these amazing shots of them. I loved every minute of it and these photographs are why. Enjoy.
